Welcome to Tugun!
Located at the southern end of the Gold Coast in Queensland, not far from the border with New South Wales; Tugun was first settled in 1898 by the Farrell family from Ireland, arriving from the Tallebudgera Township along a track known today as Simpson Road.
For many years the Farrell’s home was the only farming property in the area south of Currumbin to Coolangatta. The local aboriginal people often bartered fish and crabs with the Farrells, supplementing the settlers’ diet when times were lean.
In 1910, the Lands Department and the Post Master General both decided in favour of the name Tugun as an offical place name, and is said to mean ‘sea waves’ in a local aboriginal dialect.
In recent times, the name Flat Rock Creek has referred to the salt water stream which divides the Tugun area from Currumbin. Locals always referred to the creek as Tugun Creek, although the rocks along the beach were always known as Flat Rock.
The suburb is now home to over 4500 people and is bordered by Currumbin to the north, Bilinga to the south and Cobaki Lakes to the west.
About Tugun Progress Association
Since its establishment in 1931 the TPA has played an important role in developing our community. It works hard to ensure appropriate planning and infrastructure are delivered.
Projects have included re-establishing a bank in Tugun, supporting the Tugun Bypass, and the proposed Village Centre upgrade. It also continues to represent the Community on the Airport Noise Abatement Consultative Committee.
The Association is the Trustee of the only community owned hall for hire on the Gold Coast, located at 433 Golden Four Drive in central Tugun (Tom Atkin Hall), the hall is available for regular and one off hire.
As issues such as traffic, Cobaki Development and the Desalination Plant continue to impact the community we seek your support. If you’d like to become a member, please get in touch via the contact form.
